ACTIVE TRAVEL – Walking and Cycling
Active travel is good for you and good for the environment. Travelling actively means walking, cycling, scootering or even running. Upper Tay Transport wants to make it easier to choose walking and cycling for every day journeys. We do this in a range of ways including enabling local people to borrow electric and manual bikes, providing free bike training, supporting gentle walking and cycling groups, providing information on where to get your bike fixed, where to cycle or walk and more. We also work in schools to promote active travel.
What can walking or cycling do for your health?
Being inactive is a serious threat to our collective health. Research shows that keeping physically active can reduce the risk of heart and circulatory disease by as much as 35% and risk of early death by as much as 30%. It’s recommended that adults take part in 2.5 hours of moderate activity per week. But current physical activity levels in the UK are low: only 40% of men and 28% of women meet these minimum recommendations. One way to achieve this target is to do 30 minutes’ exercise at least five times a week – the perfect length of time for short, local journeys on foot or by bike. By swapping short car journeys with cycling or walking, you can easily build exercise into your day and reap the health benefits. Health in Motion – gentle walking and cycling groups
One of the biggest and broadest ways to improve our health and well-being is exercise. 32% of people in the UK are inactive or largely inactive which brings health issues both mental and physical. Exercise doesn’t mean marathon running; walking and cycling can make that massive difference. If it were a pill it would be flying off the shelves.
This project aims to encourage more people to get active by joining a walking or cycling group. There are a range of groups available in the Aberfeldy area.
What groups are available?
Anyone can join these groups. For walking groups you can just turn up, complete a participant form and off you go. If you wish to join a cycling group it is best to contact us in advance by phoning 07881 991176 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
